I have been loyal to you for most of my adult life. I liked that you were different from all the others. You didn’t practice favoritism. You were light and easy, and you even had a great sense of humor.
And when everyone else began to nickel and dime us, you stood strong and made sure that you kept your promises. I told people about you. I told them that you were the best. You were never fancy, but I could live with that. If I needed to make a change, no problem, no charge! Now, it seems, you want to be like everyone else. And I feel betrayed.
When all the other airlines began charging for checked bags, you continued to have two bags free. I would have been fine with only one checked bag free, but there were the rare occasions that being able to bring a second checked bag was great! And it made loading and unloading on the plane much better! There weren’t all the people trying to stuff all their belongings in their carry-on bags adding time and tension to getting on the plane like on all the other airlines. (You know, all that makes the flight attendants grumpy!) So now you want to be like everyone else!
I got good at checking in at exactly 24 hours before my flight so that I could get a good spot in line. I would set my alarm, go onto the website to check in (later to the app) and watch the clock. I would be ready to hit the tab just when the clock turned to the right time. I did appreciate that sometimes, when it would be more complicated for me to do all that, I could pay a little money for auto check in. Even if I just made it into the “B” group, I knew I could still get a window or an aisle seat. But now you are taking that away too–assigned seats. There will be special seats for those who pay to select them ahead of time. Gone are the equal opportunities to get a good seat without paying extra. I am guessing you will probably end up having a 1st Class section before long. You were the egalitarian airline. You made flying good and even fun for the regular person. Now you want to be just like all those other airlines that were always my second choice. I always compared them to you and they always fell short! Not any more! I have no favorites now!
So I am guessing there is no need to have your special credit card anymore. You won’t be the first airline I check to make my travel plans. Even when I do fly with you, I will always be thinking about the good old days, before you decided to be ordinary.
You have broken my trust…and my heart. For that matter, I’m thinking that you should change your logo, too. It seems like it doesn’t suit you anymore.
